The Warli print

Bhagalpur artisans stamp the figures one block at a time, which is why the little dancers and huts crowd together at some repeats and breathe at others. A horizontal band of stylised linear motifs closes the hem, so the print has a finish rather than simply stopping.

Light blue notes lift the yellow off the dark ground and keep the density from turning heavy.

The silk and the styling

1. How can I tell this is genuinely hand block printed and not machine printed?
Look closely at the repeats. Every motif is stamped from a hand-carved wooden block, so the spacing shifts a little from one impression to the next and the colour sits slightly differently in each. A screen or machine print gives a flawless, identical repeat; this one never does, and that is your proof it was printed by hand.

2. Will the yellow print bleed into the dark blue when I wash it?
No. The fabric is colour-fast and does not bleed on the first wash. Dry clean it the first time, then a gentle cold hand wash keeps it looking new.

3. What comes in the set?
Three unstitched pieces: a top of 2.5 metres and a bottom of 2.5 metres, both 44 to 45 inches wide, and a dupatta of 2.5 metres at 35 to 36 inches wide.
