The print

Olive on blue is a restrained pairing, and the density is high enough that the two colours read as a single deeper shade from across a room. Up close the floral repeat separates out.

Every edge is worked: chevron strips along the top and dupatta, and a different floral leaf band at the base of the bottom, so the three pieces finish as a set rather than three lengths.

Wearing it

This is the most formal colourway here. Stitch it straight, keep the sleeves long, and pair it with gold. It carries an office day, a festive evening and a daytime wedding without changing anything but the jewellery.

The reason to take this over a woven-border suit piece is the craft: the chevron and the leaf band are hand-stamped from carved wooden blocks, not machine woven in.

Small shifts in the print, a motif set a little off its neighbour, a shade that deepens where the block pressed twice: these are the marks of a hand at work, not flaws in the cloth.

Three different borders on one set means three carved blocks and three separate passes down the cloth, each aligned against an edge by eye. In Bhagalpur this is ordinary work and still slow work: a length of 2.5 metres takes hundreds of individual impressions, and the colour is mixed in the workshop for the run. Where the olive sits a shade deeper in one repeat than the next, that is the tray and the hand, not a fault.

1. Are the borders woven in or printed on?
They are printed. The chevron strips on the top and dupatta and the floral leaf band at the base of the bottom are all struck into the cloth with hand-carved wooden blocks by artisans in Bhagalpur, not woven or stitched on afterwards.

2. Will the colours bleed when I wash it?
No. The fabric is colour-fast and does not bleed on the first wash. Dry clean it the first time to settle the finish, then a gentle cold hand wash is enough.

3. What does this unstitched set include?
Three pieces: a 2.5 m top and a 2.5 m bottom, both 44 to 45 inches wide, and a 2.5 m dupatta 35 to 36 inches wide. Nothing is stitched, so your tailor cuts the silhouette you want.

4. Is there enough fabric for a larger size?
Yes. With 2.5 m in each piece the set can be stitched up to 4XL, and the length can be customised for a longer kurta or fuller silhouette.

5. Does it need a lining or aster?
No. The silk is opaque and wears well on its own. A lining is optional and only worth adding if you want a heavier, more structured fall.

6. What if the shade or the quality is not what I hoped?
An exchange is available if the shade or the quality is not loved. Screens do render colour differently, so a small variation between the photograph and the cloth is normal.
