A warm rust orange body sprinkled with flower buti, colour-blocked against a black pallu carrying heavy gold detail.

The design

Small floral sprigs sit lightly across the rust orange. The black pallu is the weight of the piece, banded and worked densely in gold with medium buti between the bands. A golden geometric zari border runs the length of both edges. The bugdi border is woven so that its design reads the same on both faces.

How it is woven

Handwoven on a pit loom in Maheshwar, Khargone district, Madhya Pradesh, with the weft inserted by hand and the buti set on a dobby.

Care and storage

1. Dry clean only, by a professional cleaner

It is handwoven on a pit loom, with the weft inserted by hand and the patterning on body, border and pallu set on a dobby. Handloom. It is woven by master weaver Aafreen in Mominpura, Maheshwar. The Handloom Mark is held with the registration on record, and every piece is checked before it leaves us. Nothing we sell is machine-woven.

What does bugdi mean?
Bugdi describes the woven border design, which reads the same on both faces of the border. It is a feature you can turn over in your hand and see for yourself.

What is a flower buti?
Buti is the small woven motif scattered across a saree, worked into the cloth on the loom rather than printed or embroidered on afterwards. A flower buti is that motif in a floral shape. On this piece they are small sprigs on the rust orange body and larger motifs inside the gold banding of the black pallu.

Will I need a petticoat with this?
The body is semi-sheer, which is what gives the saree its weight of 350-360 g and its 44-46 GSM. Wear it with a petticoat in a matching or complementary shade. The same lightness is why it drapes softly and holds its pleats through a long evening.

How do I look after it and store it between wears?
