A bright, clean red across the body, gathering into a large golden copper pallu that shows the moment the drape is thrown over the shoulder.

The design

Plain red through the body, edged with a narrow zari border of fine parallel banding. The pallu is the event: a wide golden copper panel, striped across its width, symmetrical from edge to edge. The bugdi border reads the same on both faces.

How it is woven

Woven in Mominpura, the weaving quarter of Maheshwar, on a pit loom with the weft inserted by hand and the border set on a dobby.

Care and storage

1. Dry clean only, by a professional cleaner

Held in stock rather than made to order. About half of orders leave the same or next day, most within two to three days, and most orders within India are delivered in three to seven days.

These pieces are woven in Mominpura, the weaving quarter of Maheshwar, on looms set into the floor. The weft is passed by hand, and the border is set on a dobby as the cloth grows.

Red is the shade the town is asked for most, and it is the one that shows a weaver's hand fastest. Any wobble in the beat reads as a shadow across a plain body, so the discipline has to hold for the full length before the golden copper of the pallu arrives.

The finished cloth is featherlight, semi-sheer, and soft enough to pleat in a moment. The faint unevennesses in it are the evidence of hand weaving in a finished piece.
