The borders

The pattern is placed rather than scattered: a longitudinal border runs down the length of the dupatta, a horizontal band closes the hem, and cuff-style bands sit at the sleeves, all in deep blue scrolled florals with magenta appearing through them. The turquoise ground between stays open, and the dupatta ends in a fringe.

Styling

Saturated turquoise is a daylight colour, so this is a festive brunch or day-wedding set more than an evening one. Scrollwork is cut into the block as a continuous line, which means the artisan has to land each impression exactly where the last one ended or the scroll breaks. Along the dupatta border of this set, that judgment was made again and again by hand in Bhagalpur, over the full length of the piece, before the fringe was tied at the ends.

No. The fabric is colour-fast and does not bleed on the first wash, so the saturated blue stays inside its border.
