The print

In Bhagalpur, a print like this is built one impression at a time. A block is carved from wood by hand, inked, set down on the silk, lifted, moved along and set down again - and the whole length of the top is covered that way before the teal and violet blocks follow to lay in the accents. Each colour needs its own block and its own pass. The artisans who do this work read the alignment by eye, which is why the repeat breathes slightly instead of marching in a machine-perfect line.

Will the pink bleed when I wash this suit?
No. The fabric is colour-fast and does not bleed on the first wash. Dry clean it the first time, then a gentle cold hand wash keeps the print looking as it did on day one.

How can I tell this is really hand block printed?
Look closely at the repeat. Hand block printing is done by pressing a hand-carved wooden block onto the fabric again and again, so motifs sit at very slightly different distances and a colour occasionally steps a fraction outside its outline. A screen or machine print repeats identically every time.

What comes in the set and how much fabric is there?
