The print

The floral motif is small and evenly repeated, so from a step away the set reads as a soft textured pink rather than a busy print. Up close the grey outlines show the block edges clearly. One end of the length carries a broad dark-grey patterned band, which a good tailor can position as a kurta hem, a sleeve edge or a yoke rather than cutting through it.

Look along the repeat and you will find rows that sit a fraction closer than others. That is the printer judging by eye, and it is the signature of true hand block work.

The grey you see was laid down by a wooden block carved by hand in Bhagalpur, inked and pressed onto the silk one flower at a time. The wide band at the end takes a larger block and a steadier arm - it has to land square, and there is no second attempt on silk. Generations of printers in this town have worked the same way, reading placement by eye, letting the small shifts of the hand stay visible in the finished length.

What does the unstitched set include?
Three pieces: a top of 2.5 m at 44-45 inches wide, a bottom of 2.5 m at 44-45 inches wide and a dupatta of 2.5 m at 35-36 inches wide. Your tailor can stitch it up to 4XL and adjust the length to suit you.

How should the wide grey band at the end be used?
It is best placed rather than cut through. Most tailors use it as the kurta hem, a sleeve edge or a yoke panel, so the band reads as a designed border on the finished garment.

Is the print colour-fast?
Yes. It does not bleed on the first wash and stays colour-fast afterwards. Dry clean it the first time, then a gentle cold hand wash is enough.

Do I need to line the kurta?
No. The silk is opaque on its own, so no lining or aster is required. A lining is optional if you want a heavier fall.

What if the shade is not what I expected?
Screens vary, so a shade can look a little different in person. If the colour or the quality is not what you hoped for, you can exchange it.
