The panels

The ground is a saturated sea green turquoise, printed all over with small repeating florals and paisley shapes touched with gold. Against it sit panels in a mauve tint, bordered with linear horizontal bands of geometric and paisley work.

The effect is layered rather than busy: one colour family, two temperatures, and a band of pattern to mark where they change. Small white and dark blue details keep the print from going flat.

Wearing it

Sea green suits almost everyone and photographs cool, so this is a good pick for daytime events and long office days alike. Silver or white metal jewellery works better than gold here, and a mauve or white inner reinforces the panels.

Colour work this layered normally shows up on woven silk sets at several times the price. Here it is achieved with carved blocks and repeated passes by hand.

The gold touches land more heavily in some repeats than others. That is a block being inked and pressed by hand, not a roller running at a constant speed.

Every extra colour in a block print means another block, another pass down the table and another wait for the last colour to dry. This set needed several - the turquoise ground, the mauve panels, the gold in the paisleys, the fine white and blue details. The Bhagalpur artisans build it up in layers, each one placed against the one below it by eye. What you end up holding is a cloth that took days rather than minutes.

1. How many colours are in this print and will they bleed?
The set layers turquoise, mauve, gold, white and dark blue, each from a separate hand-carved block. The fabric is colour-fast and does not bleed on the first wash.

2. What makes this a genuine hand block print?
Each colour is stamped separately by hand, so the gold and white details sit slightly differently from one repeat to the next. Machine and screen printing lay every repeat down identically.

They are printed onto the same cloth with their own blocks and bordered with linear bands, so there are no joins or extra seams to come apart.
