Two tones, three densities

The bottom carries the print at its densest, the top wears it sparingly, and the dupatta sits between them with small floral clusters gathered into a rectangular border. One palette, three rhythms, so the set never reads flat.

The motifs themselves are tiny: rounded ovoid shapes stamped in grey, with pale pink and pale yellow surfacing between them. At arm's length it reads as texture; up close it resolves into individual impressions.

The fringe

Both ends of the dupatta are left in a frayed fringe, which is what keeps a duotone set from looking severe. Ask your tailor to leave it untouched and to trim nothing back when the set is finished.

Wearing it

Yellow lifted by grey is easier to wear to an office than yellow alone, and it moves into daytime functions with gold jewellery. A grey or charcoal salwar cut from the bottom keeps the print where it flatters.

No two ovoids sit quite alike; that unevenness is what a hand-carved block leaves behind.

The block for a motif this small is the hardest kind to carve. A chisel has to take out everything around a shape no wider than a fingernail and leave the raised face clean, and it is done in Bhagalpur by hand, in wood, before a drop of colour is mixed.

Then the printing itself: hundreds of small impressions to cover a single length, each one placed against the last by eye. The rows drift a hair, the grey deepens where the block was pressed harder, and the fringe at the dupatta ends is left frayed rather than sealed. All of it is the work of hands, and all of it shows.

Is this really hand block printed, or is it screen printed?
It is genuinely hand block printed. The ovoid and floral motifs are stamped onto the silk with hand-carved wooden blocks by artisans in Bhagalpur. The proof is in the small variations in spacing and ink depth from one impression to the next, which a screen or machine print never produces.

Will the grey run onto the yellow in the wash?
No. The fabric is colour-fast and does not bleed on the first wash, so the grey stays clear of the yellow ground. Dry clean the first wash, then a gentle cold hand wash.

Does pale yellow need a lining?
No. The fabric is opaque, so no lining or aster is required. A lining is optional and only worth adding if you want a more elevated finish.
