The checkerboard

Squares of leaf motif alternate with fine vertical stripes in white and pale pink, so the dark blue ground reads as a grid rather than a scatter. At medium scale the pattern holds its shape from across a room and still rewards a close look.

In Bhagalpur, a printer aligns one wooden block against the last by eye to build this checkerboard across the Katan silk, alternating a leaf block with a fine striped block over two and a half metres. The silk takes the pigment with a soft lustre that a flat cotton would never give the same print. Every impression is placed by hand, so the small shifts where two blocks meet are the artisan's signature rather than a fault.

1. Will the dark blue bleed into the white stripes?
No. The fabric is colour-fast and does not bleed on the first wash, so lighter areas of the print stay clean.

2. How do I know the print is genuinely hand block and not machine printed?
Look closely at the repeats. Every motif is stamped from a hand-carved wooden block, so the register shifts a little and no two impressions land identically. A screen or machine print gives a flat, perfectly uniform repeat; this one does not.

3. What does the unstitched set include?
Three separate unstitched pieces: top, bottom and dupatta. The top and bottom are 2.5 metres each and 44 to 45 inches wide, and the dupatta is 2.5 metres and 35 to 36 inches wide.

4. Does the kurta need a lining?
No. The fabric is opaque, so it can be stitched unlined. A lining is purely optional, added only to elevate the look.
