The script panels

The layout is panelled rather than all-over: bands of calligraphy alternate with clean linear stripes, and the edges are kept straight and unfussy so the lettering stays the whole point. White breaks the magenta at intervals and keeps the density readable.

Katan silk gives it a soft sheen and a graceful drape, stays opaque enough to stitch unlined, and keeps the set light on the shoulder.

A straight kurta suits this one best - the panels want long, uninterrupted lines rather than gathers. Keep the jewellery minimal and let the script do the talking.

Each line of script is stamped, not printed to a template, so the rows sit a little differently along the length.

Script is the hardest thing to block print, because the eye forgives a shifted flower and never forgives a shifted letter. In Bhagalpur the printer walks a carved calligraphy block down the length of the Katan silk, lining each impression against the last by eye alone, then stamps the linear stripes that separate the panels. Where the rows breathe slightly wider or draw closer, you are reading the printer's hand, not a fault in the cloth.

1. Is the print really done by hand?
Look closely at the repeats. Every motif is stamped from a hand-carved wooden block, so the spacing shifts a little from one impression to the next and the colour sits slightly differently in each. A screen or machine print gives a flawless, identical repeat; this one never does, and that is your proof it was printed by hand.

2. Will the magenta script bleed onto the pale ground?
No. The fabric is colour-fast and does not bleed on the first wash. Dry clean it the first time, then a gentle cold hand wash keeps it looking new.

3. What comes in the set and how much fabric is there?
Three unstitched pieces: a top of 2.5 metres and a bottom of 2.5 metres, both 44 to 45 inches wide, and a dupatta of 2.5 metres at 35 to 36 inches wide.

4. Is a lining needed for a pale shade like this?
No. The fabric is opaque, so no lining or aster is needed. Some customers still add one to elevate the drape, but that is a styling choice rather than a requirement.

5. How heavy is the set?
The three pieces together weigh 600 to 650 g, so the set is light to wear and easy to carry.
