The print

The top carries the vine at its fullest, closely worked and small in scale. The dupatta eases off and hands the detail to a continuous border along its edges, and the bottom stays almost clear until a single printed band at the hem.

That grading is deliberate: it means the stitched outfit has somewhere for the eye to rest rather than three pieces competing.

Wearing it

Deep blue with cream is the safest formal pairing in the range and the easiest to wear to an office. Stitch a straight kurta, let the bottom stay plain to the hem band, and pair with silver or oxidised jewellery rather than gold.

Compared with a printed synthetic in the same colourway, this is silk that hangs with weight and holds a quiet sheen, and the border is printed by hand rather than woven in by machine.

Small shifts in the print, a motif set a little off its neighbour, a shade that deepens where the block pressed twice: these are the marks of a hand at work, not flaws in the cloth.

A border is the most demanding part of block printing. The artisan has to keep a straight run down two and a half metres of edge without a guide rail, judging each placement against the last. In Bhagalpur this is done standing at a long padded table, block in one hand, tray of colour beside it, working the length in a single session so the colour stays consistent. The vine on the top and the border on the dupatta come from different carved blocks, cut for this one print.

1. Will the cream print pick up colour from the deep blue in the wash?
No. The fabric is colour-fast and does not bleed on the first wash, which is what keeps a light print on a dark ground sharp. Dry clean it once before the first wear, then wash gently in cold water.

2. How do I know the print is done by hand and not by machine?
Look along the repeat. Hand block printing leaves small register shifts where one block meets the next, and slight variation in how much colour each impression carries. A screen or machine print repeats identically every time; this one does not.

3. What does this unstitched set include?
Three pieces: a 2.5 m top and a 2.5 m bottom, both 44 to 45 inches wide, and a 2.5 m dupatta 35 to 36 inches wide. Nothing is stitched, so your tailor cuts the silhouette you want.

4. Is there enough fabric for a larger size?
Yes. With 2.5 m in each piece the set can be stitched up to 4XL, and the length can be customised for a longer kurta or fuller silhouette.

5. Does it need a lining or aster?
No. The silk is opaque and wears well on its own. A lining is optional and only worth adding if you want a heavier, more structured fall.

6. What if the shade or the quality is not what I hoped?
An exchange is available if the shade or the quality is not loved. Screens do render colour differently, so a small variation between the photograph and the cloth is normal.
